Yesterday I shared the new Carriage Bolt Headboard that we made for our oldest son’s room makeover. Today I’m sharing the Recycled Canvas Boombox Painting that I created to hang over his bed. I knew we wanted some large over the bed and luckily I had purchased a canvas print from Ross several months prior to this project that I had never used. Honestly I don’t even know why I bought the canvas print, I liked the colors and that was about it. It was on clearance for $11 though, and even if I didn’t ever use it…that price for a canvas that size was worth it. Here’s what it looked like before:
It was sort of an abstract trees on the water type print. As soon as I knew I wanted to paint a large painting for my son’s room I primed this beast, which left me with well…a blank canvas (ha ha). After asking my son what he’d want me to paint, he quickly said “a boombox!” I really liked the idea and got to work. I quickly found some inspiration for exactly what I wanted it to look like by googling boombox clipart. I found this image, it was perfect. So I grabbed my yard stick ruler and some round bowls from the kitchen and got to work drawing out my design on to the canvas. I’m not a huge fan of painting, but I can totally handle this kind of painting.
I love how it turned out. I love the monochromatic colors and how sharp and bold it looks above his bed. We’ve always had large groupings of fun stuff on the walls so having one big piece is a nice change. My son really loves it which is the most important thing!
So in total the project cost me $11, the paint was all on hand before the project. I used a mix of primers for the white, and to mix the gray. I had the black latex paint on hand as well from a previous project. Not bad for a fun piece of artwork.

wow–love that! I have some canvases sitting around that I’ve been meaning to do something with….I haven’t done any real painting since high school art, but I might have to give it a try after seeing how great yours turned out 🙂
