DIY St. Patrick’s Day Sign

Last year I made this cute little “Lucky in Love” DIY St. Patrick’s Day Sign and I realized I never actually shared it with all of you.  It was part of my St. Patrick’s Day Mantel decor last year and I still love it.  It’s such a quick an easy sign to make, it’s cute as a small sign or it would look great on a larger scale.

Supplies:

Cricut Explore cutting machine
Vinyl for the stencil
Wood scraps or pine board
Foam brushes
DecoArt acrylic paints, Snow (Titanium) White – Grey Sky – Kelly Green
Painters tape

I always have scrap wood lying around the house since I live in a household of boys who love to build.  So finding a small piece for a quick project like this is no problem.  You can grab any wood board from your local craft store, or scraps from Home Depot.  

Start by painting your board white, use a couple of coats and let dry.

Once the white coat is dry use your 1″ painters tape to create the stripes.  You can create them any width you like, I kept mine the same width as the painters tape.

Now it’s time to paint your gray stripes.  Again, you should only need a couple of light coats.

Once the stripes are dry remove your tape.

Tip:  to achieve perfect stripes paint your base color over the edges of painters tape, and let dry before applying the stripe color.  This will prevent any bleeding and give you crisp lines.

It’s totally optional, but I wanted to distress my stripes.  I used some sandpaper to rough it up a bit around the edges and over the stripes.  It was the right choice for this sign.

I created my vinyl stencil in Cricut Design Space then cut it, weeded it, and applied it to my board with some transfer paper.  Being sure to remove any air bubbles with a vinyl squeegee.  In case you’re wondering I used the fonts Ostrich Sans and Halo Handletter for this vinyl stencil.

Add a couple of quick coats of bright Kelly Green with your foam brush, let dry.  Be sure to remove the vinyl stencil before the paint completely dries to avoid the paint peeling up.  

That’s it, cute sign right?!  I am definitely “Lucky in Love” and this little sign reminds me of that daily.
