It seems like lately we’ve been eating so many tacos in our house. I won’t lie, it’s one of our favorite foods to eat. We always have a different kind of taco recipe, and we never get sick of them. My boys love tacos made with ground beef, but sometimes ground beef can leave my stomach feeling heavy after eating it. About 2 months ago my mom taught me this trick to have Ground Beef Tacos Made Lighter with one ingredient switch up.
Now I’ve done turkey tacos before, and I’m just not a fan of ground turkey alone. It’s just not the same thing! What’s my secret to these tacos though? It’s still turkey, but I didn’t loose the ground beef either! In no way am I claiming these tacos to be healthy or low calorie, but this recipe does lighten things up a bit.
Ingredients:
– 1 lb Ground lean turkey (93/7)
– 1 lb Ground lean beef (93/7)
– 2 Packages taco seasoning (low sodium)
– 1 Small white onion, finely diced
– 1 Red bell pepper, finely diced
– 1/2 tsp. Garlic powder
– 1 Cup water
– 1/2 tsp. Salt
– 1/2 tsp. Black pepper
– 1 1/2 tablespoon oil
{feel free to make your own taco seasoning for this recipe if you are so inclined}
This recipe makes enough for leftovers, or a large family. We always make extra for other meals during the week.
Directions:
Heat a large skillet on medium high heat. Add 1/2 tablespoon of oil to the skillet. Throw in your diced onions and diced bell peppers. Saute until the onions start to become slightly translucent. Remove and set aside. Add remaining cooking oil to skillet, then add ground beef and ground turkey. Using a good cooking spoon to break the meat up as it begins cooking. Season ground meats with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Once meat is cooked add back in your onion and bell pepper. Add in your taco seasoning and 1 cup water. Stir and mix seasoning well with your ground meat mixture. Continue to cook over low heat for an additional 1-2 minutes, then remove from heat.
Serve in your favorite taco shells, soft taco sized tortillas, or over a delicious tray of nachos supreme. And garnish with your favorite toppings.
One of my absolute favorite ways to eat this (besides in tacos) is as a taco salad. Next week I will be sharing my favorite taco salad recipe. Since making this recipe at home several times I’ve noticed how much better I feel eating these tacos opposed to just traditional ground beef tacos.
